OMG… What Happened?

Ok, lets be real here, extensions are amazing! They give us Length, Fullness, Color and make us feel like the goddesses we are. But sometimes after installation, something happens that makes us say “OMG What Happened?!?”  So let’s look at some of the common OMG moments and figure out what happened so we can make sure it never happens again.

OMG WHAT HAPPENED?

Matting in between the scalp and the bond of the extension

Reasons- Too much time between maintenance services.  The hair that is naturally shedding that is being held in place by the extension bond is tangling with the hair around it.  We recommend 4-6 week maintenance schedule for fine hair and 6-8 week maintenance for medium to coarse hair.

OMG WHAT HAPPENED?

Hair is hanging with uneven tension and putting stress on one section of scalp

Reasons- This particular picture shows a steep diagonal back placement.  With this type of placement, as the hair grows the high point of the extension pulls on the scalp while the low end of the extension hangs with no tension.  By putting excess tension on one portion of the scalp this can cause irritation and over time can cause traction alopecia.

We recommend a horizontal placement. This will ensure as the hair grows in between maintenance services it grows with even tension for scalp health.

Extension is hanging in front of and on top of the ear

Reasons- This extension was placed too close to the front hair line and the upper ear hairline.

We recommend placing extensions at least two fingers width from the front hairline.  Extensions placed over the ear should be placed at least two fingers width above the hairline. They should also

OMG WHAT HAPPENED?

Hair is sticking to the top of the bond that is not in between the two extension pieces

Reasons- In this particular pic you can see the tape is placed above the top line of the extension bond so surrounding hair is getting stuck in it.

We recommend aligning the tape tab with the top of the extension bond with no tape hanging over the top or sides.  This will ensure no hair gets pulled into the tape from surrounding areas.

The tape was aligned with the top of the extension bond during original installation and over time the bond has slipped away from the tape

Reasons- There are two possible explanations for this OMG moment.  One, the bond was not properly cleaned before applying the tape tab… if natural oils are present on the bond the tape will adhere stronger to the hair and slip away from the extension bond.  Two, the tape tab was not pressed firm enough onto the extensions bond.  This can allow natural oils, water, product to seep in between the tape and the bond allowing slippage.

OMG WHAT HAPPENED?

Looks like Dandruff or Flaking stuck in the tape of the hair extension bond

This is actually not Dandruff or scalp flaking.  In most cases this is Shampoo that has not been fully cleansed and rinsed from the hair.  It then sticks to the tape bond.

This is another opportunity for teaching artistry with our extension wearers.  We recommend shampooing hair in two segments…top half and bottom half so you can get a thorough cleanse and rinse.  We also recommend shampooing multiple times if there is a long time in between hair washing to get a thorough cleanse.

*This pic also shows another example of OMG What Happened- Hair is sticking to the top of the bond that is not in between the extension bond.

OMG WHAT HAPPENED?

Redness and/or bumps on scalp

In this particular pic the extension was placed uneven… too tight on the right side and looser on the left side.  This pulls the natural hair too tight and causes irritation to the scalp.

This OMG Moment can be prevented with a clean/detailed application and placing the extensions 1/4” away from the scalp so the full extension can “flip” up and down freely.  This will prevent unnecessary tension on the delicate scalp.

*Also showing in this pic is a tight headband adding additional tension on the scalp. We recommend avoiding hair accessories that add too much tension. Try using a loose cotton headband or bandana for a similar look.

OMG WHAT HAPPENED?

AAAHHHH I scalped myself!

Reason- Well, I’m pretty sure we all know the reason why this happened, but just in case here are some of the

common reasons…

-I didn’t braid my hair while sleeping and scalped myself in my sleep

-I flipped my sunglasses on top of my head and caught a bond

-I brushed my scalp and caught a bond

Etc, Etc, Etc

Please be kind to your scalp and your extensions.
